Beech Street Parlor

I realize it's been almost a year since my last update, and that's an anniversary I didn't really want to get to, so...

Tonight I tried a new bar (perhaps a seemingly small event to revive a blog over, but at the same time it's as good an event as any other!)!  Ellen and I went to the Beech Street Parlor (corner of NE Beech and MLK, www.beechstreetparlor.com).  I read about it in an email from Portland Monthly and it sounded decent enough.  My advice is to go for the atmosphere and house infused cocktails and not stay for the food.

The food isn't bad, it's just not great and a little overpriced.  Ellen had the herbed gnocchi with eggplant and tomato which was pretty good but it was kind of a joke that it was under the 'bigger' section of the menu and not the small plates.  I had the Parlor Bacon Sandwich with pickled eggs and frisee, which was alright.  The bacon was a little hard and the pickled eggs a little bland.  Also, the fries that came with it were straight out of the cafeteria.  But the drinks...

The owners put a lot of time into infusing various libations with various fruits and beans and they all turn out great.  I had a ginger bourbon old fashioned and it was quite tasty.  As was the marionberry gin I mixed with 7-up.  The chalkboard also listed rasberry tequila and coffee vodka (which I really wanted to try but didn't get to).  Plus some others that I can't remember.  They also have a full bar, wine, and local beer.

If this place becomes known for anything, it'll be the atmosphere and decor.  It's in an old Victorian home and has been completely remodeled.  The first floor interior is designed to mainly accentuate the large wooden bar.  It's very warm, wood, dark colors and dark lighting.  And the upstairs is even better.  It's more of a lounge feel, with a few different rooms that would make great places to enjoy a few drinks with some friends.

Overall I think this place would be great for starting an evening out, either before dinner at another place or pre or post show.

SNOMG!!

This week is a trifecta of major holidays in the Taylor family.  It is my dad's 60th bday, my parents 32nd(?) wedding anniversary, and of course Thanksgiving.  So to celebrate, we got a house in Sunriver for the week.  Today my dad, Gill, and I headed east (Caitlin and Mom are coming tomorrow with Ellen arriving tomorrow or Wednesday).  Now this family vacation, the first in many years, just happens to coincide with some crazy weather up in these parts.  A serious cold snap and even some snow much earlier in the year than is typical.  Turns out they meant A LOT of snow.  We took US 26 up over Mt. Hood and it was pretty crazy.  Here's a video to give you an idea:

It was beautiful, but also SLOW.  It took us 6 hours to get to Sunriver, and we only stopped voluntarily once.  Crazy.  The last hour or so was done in the dark and visibility was less than optimum, as we narrate:

We're here now and that's nice.  I'm looking out at the back porch now staring at about 15" of snow.  The snowfall is supposed be letting up tomorrow morning but still be COLD.  Like, lows in the single digits cold.  Now we just have to get everyone else here...

Aerosmith...LIVE

Wow, was my last post really on July 12th?  I could have sworn I put something up since then.  Oh well...Camp ended middle of August, I got survived the summer and got back to Portland just fine.  A couple weeks ago the company had our annual meeting in Santa Barbara in a ridiculously nice house.  It was great to see all my 'coworkers' that I only get to see once a year.  I have inherited the promotional DVD as my big fall project.  Onward!

Last Thursday Debbie and I road (or for my Settlers playing friends - roADD) tripped it up to Vancouver B.C. to see Aerosmith, LIVE at Rodgers Arena.  There were some free tickets with our name on them (thanks for the hook up, Pops).  For those of you who aren't in the know 1) yes, all original members of the band are still alive and playing together and 2) yes, they are old as hell.  That being said, they still know how to RAWK!  Sort of.  Here are my observations of the show, in somewhat chronological order:

* Joan Jett and the Black Hearts opened.  They were awesome.  Her voice is as strong as ever and still sounds like a finely tuned revved up chainsaw when she screams.  She opened with 'Bad Reputation' and then played 'Cherry Bomb' from when she was in the Runaways.  This consists of 2/3rds of the Joan Jett songs I really know, so the middle of her set was a bit less invigorating.  Then she ended with the classic 'I Love Rock & Roll,' rounding out the last third of my Jett knowledge, and all was right with the world.

* In between bands Debbie and I enjoyed some good people watching.  There was a group of 10 or so guys and gals a few rows over who really pulled out all the stops, dressing in 80's period arena rock garb.  All the guys had on neon spandex tights and giant wigs.  It was pretty awesome.

* After the stage was reset, it was time for Aerosmith.  They came out and opened with 'Love In An Elevator,' which was fitting because it's the only song of their's I have on my iPod and Debbie and I had listened to it in the car on the ride up.

* We had great seats, 10 rows off the floor and directly in line with the stage.  We also had a great view of the GIANT 20' tall video screen that was directly above the center of the stage.  It showed live cameras from around the stage as well as pre-produced video pieces that went with specific songs.  This was good and bad.  The screen was HD, so even though we were aways away we still go very close up looks at all the band members.  They are all old.  They all have at least some gray hair.  Steven Tyler wears a lot of make up to hide the lines on his face.  For the first few songs he had sunglasses on and looked decent, even in 20' HD.  Then at some point he took his glasses off and there was an extreme close up on his face.  His eyes are so sunk into his skull at this point that look into them is like looking back to the origin of the universe.  Looking into his naked eyes you can literally see galaxies swirling, being pulled towards two bottomless black holes.  Spooky.  As for the rest of the band, Joe Perry (lead guitarist) still wears makeup and a 'rock 'n roll' wardrobe.  The drummer also dressed a little like he was trying to keep the hard rocking 70's alive.  The other two: rhythm guitarist who I will call Not-Joe-Perry, or NJP, and Bass Guy, both looked like they were in it mainly for the money.  Neither really strayed from his appointed spot on stage.  Also, if you've been keeping up on the turbulant band dynamics that have transpired over the last year or so, you'll remember that the rest of the band has gotten pretty fed up with Steven's antics/drug problems, at one point even putting out a press release saying that if Steven couldn't keep it under control they had no problem finding someone else to front the band on tour.  Something to the effect of "Steven is a fantastic singer, but he's not the only fantastic singer."  Ouch.  Well, whatever, they either patched things up or the paycheck was big enough that it didn't matter.  This was the 'Cocked, Locked, and Ready to Rock Tour;' who could pass up the chance to be part of that?!?

* So, perhaps unsurprisingly, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry are the real show here.  They both still know how to work the crowd, and Steven's voice is still awesome.  The drummer did have one moment in the spotlight, where he got the stage to himself for a majestic, 10 minute drum solo.  In which, about minute 8, he slowed his pounding to a crawl and then threw his sticks into the front row.  So, he's done, right?  NOPE.  This is arena rock folks, and that means he proceeded to solo another couple minutes with his bare hands and his head.  He used his head to play his snare drum.  Some shit you just don't see at the Doug Fir.

* When you've been around as long as Aerosmith, and had as many hits, you can play nothing but you're really well known songs for two full hours.  And that's what they did.  Including, but not limited to: love in an elevator, crazy, that song from that astroid movie, sweet emotion, walk this way, dude looks like a lady, Janie's got a gun, pink, livin' on the edge (a personal favorite), and ending with an awesome performance of Dream On.  Whew.  I got tired just typing all those out...Also, the lighting rig was so over the top that it more than made up for any slips in performance ability that may result from the bands advanced age.  Seriously, if you're prone to seizures, or have ever thought about having a seizure, don't go see this show.  And at the end of Dream On, Joe Perry made his guitar feedback a crazy amount, then laid it on the stage, took off his belt, and started whipping his guitar with it.  Again, some shit you just don't see at the Doug Fir.

All in all, it was a great show.  You can not underestimate the added fun in knowing every song a band is going to play and being able to sing along.  They still rock, and it was great time.  After the show Debbie and I jumped back into the Won Lee Wheels and headed right back to Portland, getting in just before 5 a.m.

**NOTE** If you live in Portland and I haven't seen you since getting back from camp let's plan something!  I'll even wear my new Joan Jett and the Black Hearts shirt.

Camp. Is.  Starting.

It's been a month since my last post, so I figured that means it's time for another post.  This is going to be a short one because we have our first group of campers arriving in about three hours.  Staff training went great; my staff is fantastic and they all get along great.  I think the campers are very lucky to be led by such motivated and energetic folks.

This year we also put together a video to introduce all the staff to the campers and show what good 'Friends' we are.  It was also sent out to all the other camps so those staff can see how much fun their missing out on here in Florida.  Here's the video:

It's pretty freaking funny and we had a lot of fun making it.  We're already coming up with ideas for a video to break color war...

Hope all is well wherever you are, and I'll try and update again soon.  In between playing soccer, basketball, and ultimate with the campers.  Life is rough.

I'M STILL ALIVE

I really am.  I promise.  I realize I basically haven't been using my little corner of the web for the last month and a half or so (although I know a few of you have been using the site to read my Twitter feed).

All is well, I'm just REALLY REALLY BUSY getting ready for camp.  I feel like there's much I need to catch you all up on.  TV shows I've been watching (Justified is a great show, as is Community.  And 30 Rock is still hilarious).  Movies I've seen (Iron Man 2 is better than a lot of people are giving it credit for, Kick-Ass, well, kicked ass, and I'm going to watch Crazy Heart tonight.  Finally).  Events I've gone to (Timbers' games are awesome, and sitting with the Army makes them even better).  Plus lot's of other stuff I am of course forgetting right now.

For instance, I (somewhat begrudgingly) bought a new camera.  It's only somewhat begrudgingly because while I didn't really want to spend the money, anyone who knows me knows I love getting new technology to play with (ex. iPad).  My trusty Canon Rebel XT, which had been with me for 4 years and taken thousands of pictures, finally gave up the ghost while we were in Hawaii in March for Bobby and Melissa's wedding (that was a cold ass weddin' dog).  It got a little to close to the ocean while I was trying to be all artsy, and while it didn't get submerged it did get splashed pretty good.  The salt water corroded some of the circuits blah blah blah.  It would have cost about $500 to get it fixed and I probably couldn't have gotten it back before I leave for camp, which does me no good.  So after doing my research and struggling with whether or not to spend the money, I decided on the Canon Rebel T2i (Gizmodo review here) and found a decent deal online (and to save a little more money I just bought the body and for now will use the kit lens from my old Canon).  It is of course on backorder, so it's going to have to ship straight to Florida, but I'll start posting pictures to my Picasa gallery as soon as I get it.  I am excited.

Ok, that's a brief glimpse into my life right now.  I'd love to write more, but I have to get back to work.  Good times...Let me know how you're doing, won't you?

PDX Boom!

So this is really cool.  First, some background.  Sunday night about 8 p.m. here in the fair city of Portland, 911 started getting reports of a big BOOM! that people had heard.  They kept getting more and more reports, and they seemed to center around the Sellwood area of SE Portland.  No one knew what had happened, but they sure were willing to talk about it.  Within minutes the hash tag #pdxboom had emerged on Twitter.  People were posting their locations and how loud it had been.  A local designer decided to collate all this information into a Google map that people could continue to add to.  Within a few hours hundreds of people had added their info, and a pattern started to emerge.  The most severe reports seemed to stem outwards from a park.  The police went to the park and found a large detonated pipe bomb.  Still no word on who actually dentonated it.

But the cool part is how people and technology came together to solve this little mystery.  I've heard a few of the 911 calls; some people were pretty spooked because it was REALLY loud and even shook some windows.  This is a great example of crowdsourcing, which is kind of a buzz word in business right now, but obviously can be used for other applications as well, ones there more directly serve 'the greater good'.  And of course, this was a great opportunity for the New York Times to continue their love affair with Portland.

The Presidents Are Back

My day become a hundred times better once I found this video:

So let's see if I can get ALL the great comedians reprising their roles in this short: Will Ferrell as George W., Dana Carvey as his dad George Bush, Fred Armisen as Obama, Darryl Hammond as Bill Clinton, Jim Carrey as Ronald Regan, Dan Akroyd as Jimmy Carter, and Chevy Chase as...yeah, I don't remember who he was supposed to be.  Oh, and Maya Rudolph as Mrs. Obama.  But anyway, this is one funny ass video, and seeing all these guys together reprising roles that they are so well known for from their years on SNL was really great.

Oh yeah, and if you watch the 'behind the scenes' piece, you'll find out this thing was directed by RON FREAKING HOWARD.  Well now you won't, because I just told you.
